If you find yourself looking back on 2012 and realize that you didn’t accomplish much, you may want to rethink things for 2013.  Not changing the way you do things will result in no change for the New Year.  Think about it.  If you do exactly what you did in 2012, then how do you expect things to change for you?  Maybe you’ll buy more lottery tickets and win..  Good luck with that one.  It is highly unlikely.

So what should you do?  That’s a very good question.  How about learning something new?  For 2013, instead of watching TV for several hours a day or playing Call of Duty, why not watch some video tutorials on something useful?  YouTube has plenty of videos that can teach you just about anything.  And I do mean anything.  I’ve been catching up on my Photoshop skills.

I suggest that you find something that you are interested in and make it your new hobby for the New Year.  Maybe you could use your new skill to make some money?  You and I both know that watching TV isn’t going to bring you any extra cash.  I know times are hard these days and it doesn’t look as though they will get any easier.  Make use of your spare time by doing something that will better yourself.

I’m not perfect, but I’m going to use my time to better myself for 2013.  Time is precious and I intend to make the most of what I’ve got.

Driving Traffic to Your Website

How do I drive traffic to my website?  That is a very interesting question.  There are two types of traffic generation:  Free traffic and Paid traffic.  At the time of writing this article, I only generate traffic that is free.  I am currently researching some avenues for paid traffic, but the free traffic is fine for now.

There are people out there that think driving traffic to your website is an easy task, but I got to tell you that it does take some time to learn how to do it.  You really need to have a passion to go after it and must be willing to spend a lot time to learn this stuff.  I have spent countless hours going from website to website, video to video and various online systems to finally start figuring out what was really going on.

I do affiliate marketing, blogging, and niche marketing.  All of these things all revolved around having a website and building websites. Of course you can just pay someone to do that for you, but who has the money to do all that?   I spent a lot more time learning how to make websites during all these projects I was doing.  It’s an important skill to have if you are planning to promote your business or make money online.

The more reliable your webpage content is and the more reliable backlinks you have, the more higher the search engines will rank your page.  This is the most important factor that determines your website’s page ranking with the search engines.

Article Directories
Article marketing has been around for years.  You can think of magazines and newspapers as examples of this.  They print articles that have products and services they promote.  This is the same concept that we use on the internet.  We write articles on a particular subject and submit it to article directories.  The submission process gives us the opportunity to add our website information on our profile and article to create a backlink from the article directories.  The more backlinks you have and the higher the page rank that you are backlinked from, the higher your website will move up in the search engines.

EzineArticles.com is by far the most recognized article directory.  They are ranked high and considered to be highly reliable by Google.  You always want to submit there.  Other examples are EzineMark.com and GoArticles.com.

Web 2.0 profiles

Web 2.0 is basically a community of people that share and interact with each other online to share information.  Some types of Web 2.0 sites are community blogs, wikis, social networking sites, video sharing sites, and so on.   Examples of these include youtube.com, twitter.com, flickr.com, squidoo.com, facebook.com, and so on.

Forum Profiles

Forums are internet message board sites that people hold conversations in.  I’m sure most people have seen forums online.  Examples of forum sites are linux-sat-keys.com, dabs.com, yiiframework.com.  Create a profile and edit with your homepage.

Web Directories

Web Directories are sites that have links that are categorized by keywords.  It’s a database of websites that are put together to link to other sites.  Go to DirectoryCritic.com or any other web directory and just submit your link there.  It’s pretty easy.

Backlinking is a must when you are attempting to optimize your website or blog.  Try to rotate your backlinks each day when you building your backlinks.  Try to submit 2

1 EzineArticle.com a week
2 web directories each day
2 forum profiles every 3 days
1 GoArticle/EzineMark.com every 4 days
2 web 2.0 profiles every 3 days

You can submit to however you like, this is just a suggestion.  Submitting to many at once can trigger the search engines to think that your backlinks are artificial.  This can have a negative effect or your page ranking.

Blogging is simple and fun to do.  Expressing your ideas and publishing them so that everyone can read about it is a common thing these days.  People love to talk and tell story about themselves or things around them.  Some people like to teach, put educational information, or even make money from their blogs.  Whatever the topic of reason for blogging, it is done every day by millions!

If you have a blog, then you probably know what I’m talking about.  If you don’t, you are probably not interested in blogging or just don’t know how to get started.  Getting started and setup with your very own blog is just as easy as writing to it.

I think that when people decide to actually get started, they get overwhelmed with the information and unfamiliar terms or something doesn’t go right and they just give up.  Once you overcome the learning curve involved with the basic setup process, it’s super easy.

So how do you get paid? Anytime someone clicks on your affiliate link, it has a special tracking code that is linked to your affiliate account. Think of it like this. The customer comes to your website and then you give him/her a ticket. Once they get to the vendor’s website, the vendor takes their ticket and knows that it came from you. A commission is made when the customer buys a product.

Amazon is known by most people and has a very popular affiliate program.

Making Money with Affiliate Marketing

We previously talked about becoming an affiliate marketer. One of the easiest ways to get started is with Amazon.com. Everyone knows who and what Amazon is and does.

If this is your first attempt in becoming an affiliate marketer, you have nothing to fear. It is really simple and does not take long. First open your web browser and type: www.amazon.com.

This will take you to Amazon’s homepage. Now you want to scroll to the bottom of the page and find the orange heading that says: Make Money with Us.
You will want to click the second choice that reads: Become an Affiliate

Now you are on the amazon associates page. Look to the right and click on the: Join now for FREE! tab.

Put in your email and select that you are new customer.

Put your name and create an account for registration. Create Account.

Input all of your Account Information.

Input your Website Profile information.

Push Finish

You will get a thank you page and an unique Associate ID. Push the Get Started Now button in the first column.

You will see 6 tabs at the top of the page. Those tabs at the top is where you will manage your affiliate account. You can see affiliate programs within amazon, create affiliate links, and view your reports. Click on the Links & Banners tab.

Here you can get your affiliate links we were talking about before. You can get specific product links, stylish graphical banners to product categories, and you can also get a Site Strip toolbar on your browser that will allow you to link to the amazon page you are currently on!

Select: Add Product Links now or Add Banners Now

Select the affiliate link that you would like and then copy and paste the code into your website. An affiliate link will then appear on your website and you can start earning money when purchases are made.

Go through your tabs and read about the other offers and tools that Amazon has for their affiliates. Make sure you monitor your reports to see what affiliate links are doing well.

You are now an official affiliate marketer! Make sure you experiment and try different places to put your affiliate links. Some places do better than others. You always want to test placement and types of ads that go on your website. It does make a difference!

Facebook is important because it is a communication channel that allows you to reach people all around the world right from your home. There is much that can be done with Facebook if you are determined in getting your name out there for people to see. Here’s what I’m talking about.

Today I logged onto Facebook and saw a friend who had posted more pictures up of her hand made bows. She has been posting these pictures of her beautiful bows for quite some time. I was really amazed and impressed with how dedicated she had been in consistently coming up with more bows and how they were on Facebook ALL THE TIME!  If I logged on, they were usually there.

I wanted to know what was going on so decided to reach out to her and ask her if she could tell me a little bit about the bows and what inspired her to start making them. Are these things that popular or does she just like making them for fun?  Let me tell you what, they are a bigger deal than I ever thought they were.  But now I know!

How It All Got Started…..

I first started making bows for my daughter when she was born because the prices on hair accessories for girls are very expensive. I started making them for her and then people started becoming interested and asking me where I purchased them. As a result they started asking me to make some for them and that they would pay me.

I started selling them to close friends and then put them on Facebook. Ever since then they have been selling like candy.

I have made my prices for the hair accessories very low because I know that like me, people do not want to spend a lot of money on hair accessories especially due to the economy. So my desire is for people to be able to buy my hair accessories at a low cost without having to spend a fortune and knowing that they are top quality, created with lots of attention and one of a kind.

I’m sure there was a time in your life that you asked yourself, “How Do I Build A Website?”  Well if that’s the case, then you are in luck.  I’m about to show you the steps to take to make your very own website from start to finish.  It’s really not that hard once you get your feet wet and understand some fundamentals about websites.

Create A Website

The very first step you need to take after you decide you want to make a website is to get a domain name and someone to host your domain. A domain name is the name of your website that you would enter into your web browser. You need to find one that is available and not already taken.

There are several companies out there that will host your domain for a small monthly fee. This means your website will be sitting on their servers and be available to the world 24 hours a day. Here are a few web hosting companies to choose from: Namecheap, HostGator, GoDaddy, and there are many more. All three can provide domain names and hosting.

I like Namecheap and HostGator. They are well priced and easy to use. Write down a few ideas you have for a domain names for your website and then check to see if they are not taken. I would encourage you to get a “.com” address if possible. If not, settle for a “.org or .net” address. These three seem to rank better that the others.

Once you get a domain name and hosting you are ready to get started with the actual website building. There are several tools and methods to building your very own website, but I will be using WordPress. WordPress is web software with many different themes that you can manipulate to create your very personal and unique website. I really like WordPress and have created several website using it, including this one. It is a good idea to go to WordPress.org to get a better understanding about WordPress and its power.

Namecheap and HostGator make it super easy for you to install WordPress. Just go into your Namecheap or HostGator account and follow the few steps to get WordPress setup. Once you have the latest version installed, you will be asked to provide a username. Pick something you will remember and then you will be emailed a password from WordPress to get into the backend of your website. This is your back office to your website where you will be doing all of your content creating and uploading to get your website the way you want it.

After you log into your back office, it is highly recommended that you change your password. Go to the top right hand corner of your dashboard and you will see your “Howdy, username.” Click the little arrow and you will see (Your Profile and Log Out). Click “Your Profile”, scroll to the bottom to change your password and then push “Update Profile.”

Now look to your left and notice all the different selection you can manipulate. Click on “Appearance” and then “Themes.” You will notice the Manage Themes and Install Themes tabs at the top. If you don’t like the current theme, then just click the Install Themes tab and push the Find Themes button at the bottom.

There’s a ton to choose from. Preview the themes and install the one you like. If you don’t like it later, then just delete it and pick another. You can install more than one, but can only have one activated. Once you finally find the theme you like, you will have to get familiar with its features. The developers of many of the themes provide links to websites and videos to help you maximize the theme’s potential.

Here are some suggestions about your content.  Make sure you try and put quality content that people would like to read and benefit from.  Google likes pages that have high quality content.  Also, when you are writing content, try to make it a habit to type it out in Microsoft Word and then copy and paste it from Word to Notepad.  Microsoft Word and a lot of the other word processor software out there have hidden code that is corrupted when you copy and paste it directly to your WordPress backend.

Type up your content into Word and then copy and paste it into Notepad.  Then copy and paste it into WordPress.  This will save you time and headaches.  Trust me on this one.

When you have everything the way you want it, you can publish it on the internet.  This will allow the world to see your website!

Let’s talk about how to get a Google AdSense account and start getting paid!

Let’s begin by talking a little about Google AdSense. So what exactly is it and what does it do? Google AdSense is a free program ran by Google that allows you to earn money by putting their ads on your website. They have companies they advertise for and you get these ads and put them on your website. Google shares some of the money they make with you for advertising for them. Sounds easy, right?
If this sounds like something you are interested in or just want to try, then here are the steps to follow to get started. I would encourage you to try it if you are still unsure. It’s really easy to do and does not take much time.
(It’s also a good idea to create a Gmail account if you don’t have one already. It makes things much easier with Google and will also help when we get into tracking with Google Analytics).

STEP 1
Go to www.google.com and do a search for google adsense.

Click on the “SIGN UP NOW” at the top right hand corner of the page.

Input the information listed and then push “Submit Information” at the bottom.

Go to the “My ads” tab.

Click on “+New ad unit”.

STEP 6
Customize your ad unit here. Name your ad so you can identify it from other ads you create later. You can also pick the size and media content of each ad. Click on the blue link that says, “View examples of ad types and sizes” to take a look at the various choices.
Choose the custom setting to edit the font colors, sizes, and texts here.
Push “Save and get code>>”.

Copy and paste the code into your website.
